Michelle Gurney, BPA, ABC
Shift’s principal, Michelle Gurney, brings 19 years of senior level communications and marketing expertise to every project. She has worked with a variety of major companies and organizations in Canada to create awareness of their programs, build understanding around issues and promote their wares. Her ability to identify audience insights through research, understand communication gaps and apply proven strategic planning skills, has helped her develop innovative and integrated marketing and communications solutions that deliver solid results for clients.
Michelle has degree in Communications, a diploma in Advertising and Public Relations, accreditation as a professional communicator from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), and has been recognized with more than 29 regional, national and international awards for her work in the field. She is a certified facilitator and has earned her recommended speaker status from IABC.
On a volunteer basis, she has served as a Program Director on IABC’s International Accreditation Council, is the past president of IABC Edmonton and served as Professional Development Chair for IABC Canada. Hailing from Birmingham, U.K., Michelle was raised on football, which led her to become a passionate advocate and coach for minor soccer in Banff.
Michelle is also a published author, travel writer and part-time adventure seeker.
Shift’s principal, Robin Borstmayer, brings 16 years of IT expertise to every project. He has worked with a variety of major companies and organizations in Canada to help them develop IT solutions that led to operating efficiencies and stronger performance.
Robin’s brings a unique approach to his work. He draws upon his training as a Business Analyst to help clients define their requirements and needs in a timely fashion, while remaining focused on the project’s outcomes. He is a natural communicator, with an innate ability to explain technical information in a way that everyone can grasp.
His primary focus at Shift Consulting is developing web solutions based on content management systems such as WordPress and Joomla. His experience in these systems ranges from developing small start-up sites that offer a basic web presence to complex sites including more than 250 pages of rich content and e-commerce components.

When he’s not in the office, you may see Robin in uniform, as he is proud to be a part-time firefighter with the Town of Banff. He is a former professional cyclist on the mountain bike, an avid adventure cyclist and passionate traveller. He lives in Banff, Alberta with his wife and 12 year-old-son.
Bruce Marpole, BA
BA, Communications Specialist/Writer
Bruce has worked in Communications for municipal government and has 20 years of business and management experience in a variety of corporate and small business environments. During his career he has gained experience developing communications plans, writing and executing business plans, writing customer service manuals, financial reports, newsletters, news releases and web copy. Working with clients, Bruce has helped develop and execute sponsorship programs, provide training seminars and has extensive experience managing projects and events of varying scopes.
Bruce has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal and is currently completing the Public Relations Extension certificate at Mount Royal University.
Kevin Duncan is an experienced communicator with a background in journalism, video and photo production, marketing and communications across television, print media, web and socially-based platforms.
He has worked for Sun Media, Rogers Sportsnet, and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. During his 16-year communications career, Kevin has led a variety of marketing and communications projects for clients in the arts, science, and technology sectors, including strategic plans, annual reports, brand development, media releases, promotional materials, e-mail newsletters, magazine publications, advertising campaigns, website content, social media and more.
His freelance writing projects have been published in Alberta Views, Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine, Where Magazine and he was a frequent correspondent of news and events in Canada’s Mountain National Parks for CBC’s Calgary Eyeopener. Kevin has an Advanced Diploma in Journalism from Centennial College and is currently completing a Diploma in Public Relations from the University of Victoria. Kevin is efficient in fast-paced environments, has strong relationship management skills, is unflappable in stressful situations, and has a natural ability to manage and lead with innovative ideas, humour and sound reasoning.
